Be Careful with your Training Content

This helps to steer clear cognitive dissonance (resisting an idea due to initial discomfort) and expand the employees’ minds.

You should also ensure that phrasing should not blame the employees for having any potential pre-existing biases. This might result in employees thinking that they are part of the problem and can subsequently dampen the mood or the attitude between the employees in the workplace.

Take more Effort with Managers

Let’s get one thing clear first. It will not help to go into a training program with the assumption that you can change everyone’s biases. That is not possible. However, you can suggest appropriate ideas and suggestions regarding diversity problems. This can be done to protect the unity within the employees & protect the organization.

Managers should be trained specifically on diversity training. Train them as regular employees, but at the same time, take some extra effort to provide managers with the skillset and awareness required to manage diversity training or diversity in the workplace more effectively. Do not emphasize too much on the legalities, but rather focus more on ethical communication

What I want you to know

This one is a simple exercise. Each employee gives a brief to others on who they are. Each member shares interesting facts, peeves, and beliefs about themselves. This activity is a great way to allow employees to set gauges that others may not be aware of.

The Common Thread

This is one of the best activities concerning diversity ice breaking. You begin with two employees at the front of the room. The two employees must come with a list of five similarities that exist between the both of them.

The two people select two more people and will keep repeating this exercise until everyone has five similarities with five people. This is a great exercise to find common ground between employees they didn’t know before.

Diversity Jeopardy

Just like the classic game show Jeopardy, this activity takes various diversity categories and allows the teams to use their collaborative thinking to learn about the culture of the people in your workplace.

Stereotype Squash

This diversity activity lets employees speak about stereotypes that people think might apply to them and reveal them as false. This gives the other employees the chance to base their impression on the facts learned and remove any pre-conceived biases.

Where in the World

In this activity, the team shares their geographical origins. They also share other places that they have visited/lived in. Each person can give a brief about their place of origin and other visited locations. The activity helps to create geographical awareness and breeds a desire to establish communication.
