Nowadays, antivirus software and firewalls alone are not enough to protect people from cyber attacks. Companies and institutions are constantly encountering cyber threats. And, as a result, it is not a question of “if” it will be a problem, but rather “when”. Therefore, cyber security is so crucial.

Cybercrime is on the rise, but why?

In recent years, cybercrime has become more expensive, largely due to the increased exposure of identity information to the web via cloud services.

In addition to targets like power grids and other infrastructure, cyber-attacks can disrupt or destroy industrial controls. And identity theft isn’t the only goal of cyber-attacks. Because it may affect data integrity (to destroy or change data) to discredit an organization or government.

A growing number of cybercriminals are evolving many things. It includes their tactics, changing what they target, how they affect organizations and their methods of attacking different types of security systems.

Cyber attacks are most easily launched through social engineering, phishing, and spyware. Other common attack vectors are third-party and fourth-party vendors who handle your data, often utilizing poor cybersecurity practices. The 9th Annual Cost of Cybercrime Study from Accenture and the Ponemon Institute found that the average cost of cybercrime has risen by $1.4 million to $13.0 million over the last year, and the average number of data breaches has risen 11 percent to 145.

In addition to financial data such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers, protected health information (PHI), and personally identifiable information (PII). Data breaches can also concern trade secrets, intellectual property, and other targets of industrial espionage.

In addition to these factors, cybercrime is growing due to:

  • Because of distributed nature of the Internet
  • As cybercriminals can attack targets outside of their jurisdictions, policing becomes extremely challenging
  • Profitability and ease of doing business on the dark web are increasing
  • Internet of Things (IoT) and mobile devices.

Why is cyber security important?

It is important to protect ourselves from cyber attackers who want to steal our data and use it against us. This can also be sensitive data, governmental and industry information, personal information, personally identifiable information, intellectual property, or protected health information (PHI). 

It is essential and in everyone’s interest to have advanced cyber defenses in place in order to protect this data. The majority of people in society depend on critical infrastructures. Like hospitals and other health-related facilities, financial services programs, and power plants. We cannot live without these.

An individual can suffer serious consequences as a result of cyber security attacks, such as identity theft and extortion attempts.

Many people do not understand how their data is collected, used, and shared on the Internet, despite this being a human right.

Cambridge Analytica’s scandal from the spring of 2018 – exposed the exploitation of personal data to sway several elections. Which- demonstrates that the right to privacy goes beyond control over personal data. It threatens the very possibility of conducting a sound democratic process, and therefore the very protection of human rights as a whole.

Because of this, as a society, we must consider privacy to be a fundamental right. Taking the conceptual view, it must undergo the same evolutionary process as its older sibling, the right to freedom of expression. As freedom of expression began as a personal right of expression and developed into a collective right. Which helps maintain a vibrant and functional public discourse so that democratic processes can function, so too privacy must grow and develop – from personal rights of ownership to collective rights of protection from autonomy traps during elections and mind control.

Regulatory authorities will have to develop laws defining personal data as a separate market. Antitrust agencies will have to examine the degree of concentration of personal data held by a single entity.
