What is Employee Burnout and How to Avoid it?

Some businesses make the mistake of perceiving employee burnout for something else, such as tired, disengaged, or lazy workers. Burnout is often misunderstood in organizations as a personnel management issue—or, more typically, a personal one.

Nearly a quarter (23%) of employees said they were burned out at work frequently or constantly, while another 44% said they were burned out occasionally.

That indicates that around two-thirds of full-time employees are burnt out on the job.

Employee burnout can have severe consequences for both your company and your staff. Disengaged employees have 37 percent higher absenteeism, 18 percent poorer productivity, and 15% lower profitability, according to Gallup, and burned-out employees are 23 percent more likely to visit the emergency department.

Employee Burnout Symptoms: Recognizing Them

You may be experiencing burnout if an employee who was previously trustworthy and engaged suddenly becomes unreliable and lax, or if you’re continually hearing criticism from an employee who was formerly a source of inspiration for others. The drop in productivity could be due to being overworked—or simply not liking what you’re doing.

“When you’re burned out, your ability to perform is harmed, and your belief in yourself is shattered,” writes Monique Valcour, an executive coach, and Harvard Business Review contributor. 

Employee burnout can manifest itself in a mixture of ways, including:

  • The inability to focus
  • Easily irritated or enraged
  • Illness that recurs
  • Sleeping problems
  • Workplace alienation Cynicism toward people and their jobs
  • Hopelessness
  • And there are plenty more.

It’s also crucial to know the difference between stress and burnout. Burnout is about not having enough: feeling empty and psychologically weary, lacking motivation—beyond caring.

Burnout occurs when you feel as if you’re drowning in duties as a result of extreme stress.

Employees are likely to understand and be knowledgeable with the sense of being under a lot of stress; yet, when it reaches burnout, they may not even admit to themselves it is happening. Stressed people, on the other hand, may believe that if they only get everything under control, they would feel better. Burnout victims often consider there is no way to improve their circumstances.

It’s Critical to Regain a Sense of Control During Recovery

Although there is no simple, one-size-fits-all cure for burnout, there are techniques that have been shown to help people regain control of their emotions and rediscover joy and meaning in their work:

  • Discover what inspires your personnel and focus on their requirements.
  • Show your thanks for their efforts by recognizing them on a regular basis or occasionally granting early release or other small favors to brighten an otherwise drab day.
  • Limit overtime—working long hours is not a good idea.
  • Encourage employees to participate in company-sponsored programs. Being a part of a culture can help with burnout issues and provide a support system.
  • Make yourself available and pay attention. Sometimes the answer is obvious; other times, it’s a little more difficult. But until you pay attention, you’ll never know.

Burnout may entirely change how those affected feel about life and make their previous existence seem like a dream, despite the fact that it may appear dramatic. However, it’s critical to remind them that the situation isn’t hopeless.
